Picture
For the in-depth study the 154 page eBook is available to purchase at our Store.
A little background :
The book of Matthew is one of the Bible's four Gospels (along with Mark, Luke and John) - the narrative accounts of the "good news" (gospel). The Gospels are called narratives because they are four separate repots or accounts of the same true story of what happened in, to and through the life of Jesus Christ. The Gospel according to Matthew is quite fitting as an introduction to the New Testament and to "the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Although the author is not identified by name in the Biblical text, the testimony of all early church leaders (beginning around A.D. 130) is that Matthew, one of Jesus' original twelve disciples, wrote this Gospel.

MATTHEW CHAPTER ONE
At the time when Christ was born, Israel had been conquered by the Romans and they really oppressed the people. They had a cruel taxing system that they put on countries that they conquered. They had a poll tax, which is like our income tax, the other was called the ground tax, which would be similar to a property or land tax. Some of the wealthy Romans would hire people they called Publicans or tax collectors to do the actual tax collecting. The problem was these tax collectors usually didn't collect for the Romans, they lined their pockets as well.
Matthew Chapter One Questions
  1. Read Matthew 1:1-17 - Why did Matthew start off with a genealogy?
  2. Were genealogies important to the Jews? If so, why? (Reference - Number  26:52-56; Luke 2:1-4; Romans 11:1).
  3. The word "Christ" means ________?
  4. Matthew provides the clear record that Jesus was a legal descendant of  ________ __________.
  5. Notice how the word “the father of” are used with all the names down to Joseph, then comes a change. It does not say that Joseph “was the father of “ Jesus, but rather that Joseph was the “_______ of Mary, of whom was born Jesus” (Matthew 1:23).

  6. The name “Jesus” is the Greek form of the Hebrew word “Yeshua” (Joshua), meaning “the _______ saves” (Joshua 1:1).
  7. Both Matthew’s and Luke’s Gospel narratives agree that Jesus Christ was conceived by the _______ _______  (Verse 18; Luke 1:34-34) and born of a virgin mother - that is, without the participation of a human father.
  8. What do we learn about Mary's character?

Application Questions
  1. Is Jesus your Savior? Has He saved you from your sins? When did you make that decision?

  3. Have you experienced God’s grace in your life? It is easy for us to take it for granted, viewing it more as a right, rather than as a blessing. Think back to the instances that God has been especially gracious to you. Even if you remembered to thank Him, did you find that you soon forgot His goodness? Spend some time after dinner with your family or a friend and have each of you mention one by one as many things as possible that you can thank God for...past, present, or future.
  4. Do you have the character qualities that Mary had? Are there any you want to work on?
  5. Are you like Joseph, listening to God's instructions and doing immediately what God asks you to do?
  6. What has been meaningful to you from this study of Matthew One? What could you apply to your life?
