While Mark's Gospel was written for the Romans and Luke's Gospel for Theophilus and other Gentiles (people other than Jews), Matthew's Gospel was written specifically for Jewish believers. The Jewish background of this Gospel is clearly present in many ways.

Though this Gospel is written with the Jewish audience in mind, it is not for Jews alone. Like the message of Jesus himself, Matthew's Gospel was written for the whole church (for all who would follow Christ). In this way, it faithfully reveals the cross-cultural and worldwide scope of the good news about Jesu (Matthew 2:1-12; 8:11-12; 13:38; 21:43; 28:18-20). Matthew Chapter Three Questions

A little background : The book of Matthew is one of the Bible's four Gospels (along with Mark, Luke and John) - the narrative accounts of the "good news" (gospel). The Gospels are called narratives because they are four separate repots or accounts of the same true story of what happened in, to and through the life of Jesus Christ. The Gospel according to Matthew is quite fitting as an introduction to the New Testament and to "the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Although the author is not identified by name in the Biblical text, the testimony of all early church leaders (beginning around A.D. 130) is that Matthew, one of Jesus' original twelve disciples, wrote this Gospel. Outline for week one
At the time when Christ was born, Israel had been conquered by the Romans and they really oppressed the people. They had a cruel taxing system that they put on countries that they conquered. They had a poll tax, which is like our income tax, the other was called the ground tax, which would be similar to a property or land tax. Some of the wealthy Romans would hire people they called Publicans or tax collectors to do the actual tax collecting. The problem was these tax collectors usually didn't collect for the Romans, they lined their pockets as well. Matthew Chapter One Questions

Hope you are enjoying our study so far. SURVEY / SPECIAL FEATURES Survey For the most part, the book is a serious warning about the approaching day of God's judgment on all evil and rebellion against Him. Zephaniah saw a future worldwide judgment coming because of the sins of all humanity (Zephaniah 1:2; 3:8). But he especially focused on the judgment coming on Judah for her offenses against God (Zephaniah 1:4-18; 3:10-7). Zephaniah urged the people to humble themselves and repent - to change their attitude toward God, admit their sin, turn from their own way and begin following God's plans - before his prophecy of doom came upon them (Zephaniah 2:1-3). This national repentance happened in part during King Josiah's reforms and the revival that followed (627-609B.C.). Zephaniah also prophesied about the coming judgment on five foreign nations: Philistia, Ammon, Moab, Cush and Assyria (Zephaniah 2:4-15). After addressing the sins of Jerusalem once again (Zephaniah 3:1-7), the prophet predicted a time when God would rescue, regather and restore His people. Then they would rejoice as true worshipers of the Almighty God, and God would literally be among them as a victorious warrior (Zephaniah 3:9-20). SPECIAL FEATURES Five major features characterize the book of Zephaniah. 1. Zephaniah is the only prophet to give an extended list of his ancestry (family line), going back four generations to King Hezekiah. 2. It has the most detailed revelation in the Old Testament about the future "day of the LORD." 3. It is an example showing that God's people need to be confronted by His warnings of judgment as well as comforted by His promises of salvation. 4. It contains a wee-developed teaching about the faithful remnant (the portion of Israel that would be scattered but would endure throughout history and remain loyal to God); this remnant would be restored when the Lord came to bring final judgment (Zephaniah 3:9-20). 5. Zephaniah's revelation about the coming day of God's judgment for the wicked and the great day of salvation for His people is a major contribution to the New Testament revelation about the end times. NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT Jesus may have pointed back to Zephaniah twice (Zephaniah 1:2-3; Matthew 13:40-42), (Zephaniah 1:15; Matthew 24:29). Both references are related to His second coming (not the "rapture" of the church, but His literal return to earth following the tribulation. New Testament writers understood Zephaniah's message about the "day of the LORD" as a description of the end-time events beginning with the great tribulation and concluding with Jesus' return to judge the living and the dead (compare Zephaniah 1:14 with Revelation 6:17; 3:8 with Revelation 16:1) The new Testament refers often to Christ's second coming and the day of judgment as simply "the Day" (1 Corinthians 3:13; 2 Timothy 1:12, 18; 4:8). Closing prayer for our bible study Lord, We love studying the bible, We thank You for speaking to us through Your Word, We also thank You for Your continued revelation that You have given us this far, Thank you for allowing us to have this bible study, Through it we have really gained and our inner eyes have been opened, We praise You forever, Be with us always until we meet again. Also I would like to hear from you. Please feel free to leave a short note or a comment. Blessings, Margarita & Stace Welcome back to our bible Study! Let's Get Started with Day Two Purpose Zephaniah prophesied and wrote to warn the nation of Judah and the city of Jerusalem about God's approaching judgment. He called this judgment period "the great day of the LORD" (Zephaniah 1:14). This great day is motioned throughout Scripture and has both short-term and long-term applications as it relates to God's judgment on His people and all nations. The immediate application during Zephaniah's time was that God's rebellious people in Judah would be punished for their wickedness, as would the ungodly nations that he lists by name. The future application of the prophecy relates to the final judgment of the church (Christ's followers) and the rest of the world at the end of history. Zephaniah also wrote to encourage God's people in Judah that He would one day restore them (to their homeland, to their relationship with Him and to their place of honor). At that time, Judah would sing the praises of their God, who would be living among them. When the phrase "the day of the LORD" appears in the Bible, it usually is not referring to a single day or event but to a period of time. When the phrase is used in relation to the end times, that period begins immediately following the rapture of the church, when Christ's followers will be taken suddenly form the world to escape the end-time judgments on the world. The period of those judgments - referred to as the "great tribulation" - is included in "the Day". This time reaches its climax when Christ returns to earth to defeat the antichrist ad all of God's enemies and to establish His own reign of peace for the last thousand years of history (Revelation 19-20). For God's enemies, "the day of the LORD" means terrible destruction and judgment, but for God's faithful people it means rescue and reward. A reference to the "day of the LORD" can be traced back to Amos 5:18, where it refers to a time when God will intervene (divinely act in situations on earth) in world events to deliver judgment or blessing - depending on people's relationship with God. This is also true in the New Testament, which refers to a time of judgment on God's enemies (Romans 2:5; 2 Peter 2:9), but also to "the day of redemption," or salvation, for His followers (Ephesians 4:30). Other phrases that refer to the same general period of time are "the day of God" (2 Peter 3:12). Other phrases that refer to the same general period of time are "the day of God" (2 Peter 3:12) or of Christ (1 Corinthians 1:8; Philippians 1:6), the "last day" (John 6:39), the "great Day" (Jude 1:6) or simply "the day" ( 2 Thessalonians 1:10). The final "day of the LORD" is the climax of history. Though several signs will come before this time, Christ's return and the judgment that follows will still surprise people when that day comes, like a thief in the night (Matthew 24:43-44; Luke 12:39-40; 2 Peter 3:10; Revelation 3:3; 16:14-15). Let's end today with a closing prayer My dear loving Father, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for leading us through the bible study that we have just had, thank you for the Holy Spirit that has lead us to the truth that is in Jesus Christ, heavenly Father, we want to ask you that you fill us with the knowledge of truth and give us the wisdom and understanding that you have promised. may the truth in Jesus be revealed in us so that we can be fruitful in all that we do. It has only three chapters, but is a powerful book. This study will be a week long. I will give a summary / insight of Zephaniah. For the in-depth study visit our Etsy Store for a E-book of Zephaniah bible Study. What the book of Zephaniah is about: a little insight. AUTHOR: Zephaniah DATE OF WRITING: c. 630 B.C. THEME / PURPOSE: The Day of the Lord/ Destruction and Salvation A little Background: Zephaniah, whose name means "the LORD hides," was a great-great-grandson of King Hezekiah of Judah and prophesied during the reign of Josiah (639-609B.C.), Judah's last godly ruler (Zephaniah 1:1). Zephaniah's reference to Jerusalem as "this place" (Zephaniah 1:4), as well as his detailed description of Jerusalem's landscape and its sins, supports the belief by scholars that he lived in this city. Being a descendant of royalty and related to King Josiah (also a great-great-grandson of Hezekiah) meant that Zephaniah had access to the royal palace. His prophecies focused on God's message for Judah and the surrounding nations. Because of the type of sins that Zephaniah mentions when he makes charges against the nation of Judah and its capital, Jerusalem (Zephaniah 1:4-13; 3:1-7), it is likely that his prophecies were given before Josiah's reforms, which led to a spiritual revival in Judah. Zephaniah's message came at a time when society was still quite involved in the terrible sins of Josiah's wicked predecessors (Manasseh and Amon), It was not until the 12th year of Josiah's reign (627B.c) that the king began to cleanse the nation of idolatry (worshiping false gods or other things instead of the one true God) and turn the people back to the true worship of the Lord. eight years later, he ordered the repair and purification of Solomon's Temple, during which time a copy of God's law was discovered (2 Kings 22:1-10), Zephaniah's description of Judah's low spiritual and moral condition must have been written about 630 B.C. Zephaniah's preaching probably had a direct influence on the king, helping to inspire his reforms. The 630 B.C. date also seems correct since there is no reference to Babylon as the leading world power, (Babylon began its rise to world leadership under Nabopolassar in 626-625B.C., when it gained independence from the Assyrian Empire.) However, Zephaniah did prophesy about the downfall of mighty Assyria (at the hands of a Babylonian coalition), an event that occurred in 612 B.C. with the destruction of Nineveh, its capital city. The prophet Jeremiah was younger than Zephaniah but lived during the same general time period. Please feel free to leave a short note or comment.
