April 1 - Start Your Day Right Devotion

Philippians 3:9 And be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ – the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.

Righteousness That Comes From God

​The righteousness of Christ’s followers (their right relationship with God and the power of His Spirit to live right by His standard) consists first of all in being forgiven, justified (made right with God) and accepted by God through faith (Romans 4:5).
  1. However, our righteousness is more than this. God’s Word states that our righteousness is Christ Jesus Himself, living within our hearts (Philippians 1:20-21; Romans 8:10; 1 Corinthians 1:30; Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 3:17; Colossians 3:4). This means that Jesus’ righteous character is being expressed through us. In the Old Testament, the Messiah (Savior, Christ) is referred to as the “righteous Branch” and “The Lord Our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:5-6). This means that the righteousness we have is not of ourselves but is from Jesus, in whom we put our faith (1 Corinthians 1:30; Galatians 2:20). Because of Christ’s personal sacrifice for our sins and His presence within us by the Holy Spirit, we become in Him “the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
  2. The basis for our spiritual salvation and our only hope of remaining in a right relationship with Him is the sacrificial death and shed blood of Christ (Romans 3:24; 4:25; 5:9; 8:3-4; 1 Corinthians 15:3; Galatians 1:4; 2:20; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 9:14; 1 Peter 1:18-19; 1 John 4:10) and His resurrection life from the Holy Spirit within our hearts (Romans 4:22).

Philippians 3:19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.
​THEIR GOD IS THEIR STOMACH – THEIR MIND IS ON EARTHLY THINGS
​This describes self-centered people who allow their appetites and desires (not just physical ones) to come before anything else. Their minds are on worldly things. Such people resist and rebel against the law and are unrestrained morally. They are the opposite of legalists. While legalists represented one false extreme by saying that people had to keep certain rules in order to gain spiritual salvation (Verse 2-3), libertines (those who are morally unrestrained) were at the other extreme in saying that Christians were free to do as they pleased as long as they relied on God’s grace. Both errors are spiritually fatal.

BEING CONFIDENT OF THIS 
​Paul’s confidence in the Philippians is based not only on God’s good work in their lives and their church, but also on their passion and sacrifice for the cause of Christ (Philippians 1:5, 7; 4:15-18). Because they have already proven to be faithful in supporting and partnering in the work of ministry, Paul was certain that God would continue to work in and through them. God is always faithful to ensure that His work will be effective in the lives of those who remain loyal to and dependent on Him. However, His faithfulness can do nothing for those who resist His grace (unearned favor, love, help and spiritual enablement) and refuse His gift of salvation (Philippians 2:13; 2 Timothy 2:13).

DECEMBER 2 - START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.
​WHATEVER IS PURE
​To experience God’s peace and freedom from anxiety, believers must fix their minds on those things that are true, noble, right, pure, etc. If you do these things, says Paul, “the God of peace will be with you” (Verse 9). The result of allowing our minds to be occupied with the ungodly things of the world is that the joy, nearness, and peace of God are lost, and our hearts are not longer guarded. This verse also speaks of the influence of a person’s thoughts and attitudes on his or her life. Whatever occupies a person’s thinking will eventually work its way out in words or actions (Matthew 5:28; 15:19; Mark 7:21; Luke 6:45). Paul follows the challenge to “think about such things” by telling believers to “Put into practice” (Verse 9) these things. The qualities and character traits listed in this verse will lead to healthy thought patterns that will be shown in a life of moral purity and spiritual fitness.

​GOD WHO WORKS IN YOU
​God works by His Spirit within the lives of Christ’s followers to produce in them both the desire and the power to do what is good and right and to fulfill His purposes for their lives. However, God’s work is not forced, and His grace (His undeserved favor, love, and spiritual help) can be resisted. That is to say, we can reject God’s help and guidance and go our own sinful and destructive way if we so choose. God’s work within us (Philippians 1:6; 1 Thessalonians 5:24; 2 Timothy 4:18; Titus 3:5-7) is always dependent on our faithfulness and cooperation (Verse 12, 14-16).

OCTOBER 11 - START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

​Philippians 1:10-11 
So that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ – to the glory and praise of God. 
PURE AND BLAMELESS
​“Pure” means “without any mixture of evil.” “Blameless” means “not causing offense” to God or another person. This relates to holiness (moral purity, spiritual wholeness, separation from evil and dedication to God), which must be the highest aim of all Christians in light of Christ’s soon-coming return. Only through the passion, presence and power of the Holy Spirit working in their lives can believers develop godly character (Romans 5:5; Titus 3:5-6), be fully committed to God’s Word, “discern what is best” and remain “pure and blameless until the day of Christ.”

And this is my prayer:
that your love may abound more and more
​in knowledge and depth of insight, 
​LOVE MY ABOUND IN KNOWLEDGE
Love, if it is to be truly Christian, must be based on Biblical revelation and knowledge – the things God shows and teaches us through His Word.
  1. In the New Testament, in term “knowledge” (Greek epignosis) refers to more than knowing information and facts; it is a spiritual assurance within one’s heart. It is a deep confidence directly related to God’s character, work, and purposes, and it expresses itself in active trust and obedience to God. In this sense, we truly know God’s Word only as we live the Word, and it becomes part of who we are. Biblical knowledge goes beyond knowing about God to actually knowing Him personally through a deep and growing relationship. As a result of this relationship, we will become more like Christ and take on His character traits, including a greater love for Him and others (Verse 10-11; Ephesians 3:16-19).
  2. To know God’s Word (Romans 7:1) or to know God’s will (His desires and plans based on His character and purposes, Acts 22:14; Romans 2:18) suggests knowing God personally (John 17:3), obeying His Word (1 John 5:3) and expressing His Love (1 John 4:8). The goal of knowing the truth of God’s Word (1 Timothy 6:3; Titus 1:9; Galatians 1:9), is a deeper love for God and freedom from sin (all that offends and opposes God, Romans 6:6). “Depth of insight” means that Christians, through true love and godly knowledge, learn to distinguish between what is good and evil, true, and false, right, and wrong.

    Micah was a country prophet who was deeply sensitive to the social issues that affected the small towns and villages throughout Judah.
