October 31 - Start Your Day Right Devotion

2 Timothy 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

​A SPIRIT OF POWER, OF LOVE AND OF SELF-DISCIPLINE

​It seems that a lack of confidence or being too timid was sometimes a problem for Timothy (1 Corinthians 16:10-11; 1 Timothy 4:12). But he did not have to rely on his own strength and ability to fulfill the ministry God had given him. Whatever God calls us to do, we have no reason to fear (Romans 8:15) because God never calls us to a task for which He will not equip and enable us by the power of His Spirit. Our primary motivation for serving God should be love – God’s love for us (Romans 5:8; Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 5:2; 1 John 4:10) and our love for Him and others (Mark 12:30-31; 1 John 3:17; 4:19). But it also takes great discipline to step out in faith and us the gifts He has given us to accomplish His purposes.

​True love for God is expressed in our actions and is done for His sake. It is more than kind words and loving feelings; true love is shown through active compassion that meet real needs in tangible ways (1 John 3:17). Such actions show others what God’s love is like and will often open their hearts spiritually to consider accepting Christ as their personal Savior. Christians who truly want to reach others for Christ must realize that they may need to meet people’s physical needs before some will be open to receive help for their spiritual needs.

(KJ) Jeremiah 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them. saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

​THEY WILL ALL KNOW ME

​Under the terms of the new covenant – God’s “life agreement” established by Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection – all people who accept Christ and entrust their lives to Him can personally know God and enjoy friendship with Jesus. They will have direct access to God and will experience His constant presence through the Holy Spirit living within them. 
I WILL FORGIVE THEIR WICKEDNESS
Being forgiven for sins (offenses and shortcomings toward God) and being restored to a right relationship with God are foundational in the new covenant. These spiritual benefits are based on Christ's sacrificial death on the cross, which paid the penalty for our sins (Isaiah 53:4; Isaiah 53:5; Isaiah 53:6; Matthew 26:27-28; Luke 22:20).

Psalms 143:1 O LORD, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief.

​HEAR MY PRAYER

​Like the preceding psalm, this one describes a person who is facing overwhelming troubles and feels he has reached his limit (Psalms 143:3-4, 7; 104:29). All he has left is a prayer that God will restore his hope and rescue him from his desperate situation (Psalms 143:10-11).

Psalms 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.

HIS LAW HE MEDITATES DAY AND NIGHT

Those who desire to live with God's blessing and favor meditate on God's law (His Word) in order to shape their thinking, attitudes and actions in a positive way. Meditating on God's Word involves reading a passage and thinking on it long and seriously to know its meaning. It involves comparing it with other Bible passages and determining how to rightly apply the truth to one's life. When meditating on a passage in the Bible, it is helpful to consider the following questions:
  • How might god's Spirit be applying this verse to my present situation?
  • What is this passage teaching me about God's character?
  • Is there a promise here for me to recognize and claim?
  • Is this passage revealing a particular sin I must try to avoid?
  • Is God giving a command I must obey?
  • How should this truth affect my relationship with other people?
  • Is my spirit in harmony with what the Holy Spirit is saying? 
  • Is the passage expressing a truth about God, salvation, sin, the world or my personal behavior that I need to understand better with the Holy Spirit's help? 
  • Is there something in this passage I can thank or praise God for?
  • How can I grow closer to God in light of what He is showing me through His Word?
