THEIR CONSCIENCE IS WEAK

Picture
(KJ) 1 Corinthians 8:7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto and idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

THEIR CONSCIENCE IS WEAK

In this case, those with "weak" consciences are those who did not fully grasp the fact that since the gods represented by idols were not real, then it was not a moral issue to eat meat that had been offered to those idols.
  1. Some people thought that by eating meat that had been sacrificed to altars to false gods, they were somehow association with ungodly worship and sinning against Christ. While this view was not totally unreasonable, it did represent a lack of understanding in regard to spiritual freedom. This does not mean, however, that those who held this view because of conscience were any less spiritual, sincere or enlightened than those who could eat the meat in good conscience.
  2. We must keep in mind that the issue here has to do with food - what goes in and out of the body - which does not affect the spirit. This principle must not be taken out of context and misapplied to morally questionable issues that relate more to the mind and spirit. For example, this principle is not meant to justify the Christian about such things as questionable forms of entertainment or choosing to dress in immodest clothing (1 Timothy 2:9). Such practices fall into a completely different category than food because they affect more than the body and can easily influence people's thoughts, opening a door for Satan to temp them spiritually (Mark 7:21-23; Ephesians 5:3-7; Ephesians 5:5; Ephesians 5:6; Colossians 3:5). In fact, when it comes to issues that raise legitimate moral question and can affect the mind and spirit, it is often those who refrain from the activities who show the stronger, more spiritually sensitive consciences. At the same time, those with more permissive standards of Christian freedom may be at risk of weakening their consciences by following their personal preferences.
  3. Notice that Paul does not focus so much on convincing those with "weak" consciences to gain greater understanding. Rather, he challenges those who have correct insight about certain conduct not to be puffed up about their freedom and, therefore, force their liberty on others who hold stricter views.

LITTLE YEAST WORKS THROUGH THE WHOLE BATCH

(KJ) 1 Corinthians 5:6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

LITTLE YEAST WORKS THROUGHT
THE WHOLE BATCH

Paul uses a comparison between a common element that they all knew of and the spiritual principle that the church needs to learn about purity and discipline in the church. He uses the example of yeast being forbidden when preparing the bread to be eaten at the "Passover Feast (Exodus 12:15). In the Bible, "yeast" (which brings about a reaction that causes change) is often mentioned as a symbol of evil or sin. Like the yeast, sin is able to spread through an entire church congregation or Christian community and corrupt its commitment to truth and authentic spiritual life (Galatians 5:7-9; Exodus 13:7; Mark 8:15). Any church that does not take radical action against sexual immorality among its members will find the influence of evil spreading throughout the congregation and infecting many. Eventually, this can cause the Holy Spirit to withdraw His godly influence and power from the church (Revelation 2-3).

ONE REMAINS HUNGRY, ANOTHER GETS DRUNK

7/25/2023

July 25-Start Your Day Right Devotion

Picture
(KJ) 1 Corinthians 11:21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper; and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

ONE REMAINS HUNGRY,
ANOTHER GETS DRUNK

In addition to the Lord's Supper, the early church held what was referred to as the agape ("love") feasts, which was probably like a present-day church fellowship meal (2 Peter 2:13; Jude 1:12). These probably took place in homes where those in the early church often met for worship and fellowship. "One remains hungry, another gets drunk" could also be translated, "One remains hungry, another is filled to the full," since the word "drunk" (Greek methuo) can refer to being intoxicated or to being filled or satisfied without reference to intoxication.
The context of this verse clearly relates to the meal in general. When the Corinthians came together for their fellowship meals before eating the Lord's Supper (2 Peter 2:13; Jude 1:12), some gathered in small groups, separated by social class, and ate their meals separately (1 Corinthians 11:18-19). The poor, who could not contribute much, if any, to the meal were often ignored and left hungry. Paul condemned the behavior of those who ignored the poor (1 Corinthians 11:17) for three reasons: (a) They were practicing and encouraging division in the church. Sadly, all of this was centered on the Lord's supper (1 Corinthians 11:27). (b) They were humiliating members of the church who were poor and probably coming directly from work without food (1 Corinthians 11:22; Matthew 25:40). (c) Some of the rich may have been bringing fermented wine and getting intoxicated, which Paul would have considered even more unacceptable. Some interpreters, however, feel that Paul was not referring to an issue of intoxication here, or else he would have severely condemned it as he did elsewhere in the letter (1 Corinthians 6:10). He considered drunkenness not only as an issue of dishonor toward others, but also a condition serious enough to cause people to turn from God's kingdom (1 Corinthians 6:10; Galatians 5:21).
The tragedy in this case is that the primary purposes of the Lord's Supper - to commemorate and celebrate Christ and to enjoy a sense of community with other Christians - were corrupted by selfish acts of overeating and discrimination.

THE LORD'S SUPPER

Juley 24 - Start your Day Right Devotion

Picture
(KJ) 1 Corinthians 11:20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.

THE LORD'S SUPPER

The Lord's Supper (the sacrament of communion), as established by Jesus Himself, is described in four passages: Matthew 26:26-29; Matthew 26:28; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:15-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25; 1 Corinthians 11:25. Its significance relates to the past, the present and the future.
  1. The past significance. (a) It is a living memorial or remembrance (Greek anamnesis; 1 Corinthians 11:24-26; Luke 22:19) of Christ's death for the believer's redemption (rescue, liberation, salvation) from sin and from condemning judgment. By participating in the Lord's Supper, we are once again reminded of Christ's sacrifice and its significance for our lives. Christ's love, as evidenced in the giving of His life for us, is our highest motivation for obeying Him and for avoiding the appearance of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22). (b) it is an occasion of thanksgiving (Greek eucharistia) for the salvation and blessings that God made available by Christ's sacrifice on the cross (1 Corinthians 11:24; Matthew 26:27; Mark 14:23: Luke 22:19) - Spiritually, physically and in every other way (Isaiah 53:4; Isaiah 53:5).
  2. The present significance. (a) The Lord's Supper is a fellowship (Greek koinonia) - a time to experience companionship and unity with Christ and a sense of community with members of Christ's body (the church, 1 Corinthians 10:16-17; 1 Corinthians 10:16). It is an opportunity to participate in the benefits of His sacrificial death. In this supper with the risen Lord, He as the host is present in a special way (Matthew 18:20; Luke 24:35). (b) It is a recognition and an open declaration of the new covenant (Greek kaine diatheke) - God's plan of spiritual salvation and a relationship with people established by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through this commemorative meal (ceremony of remembrance), we reaffirm the lordship of Christ and our commitment to do His will, to remain loyal to Him, to resist sin and to identify ourselves with His mission (1 Corinthians 11:25; Matthew 26;28; Mark 14:24; Luke 22:20).
  3. The future significance. (a) The Lord's Supper gives a preview and a "taste" of God's future kingdom and the future heavenly banquet in honor of Christ when all of His faithful followers will be with the Lord (Matthew 8:11; 22:1-14; Mark 14:25; Luke 13:29; 22:17-18). (b) It looks forward to Christ's return for His people (1 Corinthians 11:26) and is a living expression of the prayer, "Your kingdom come" (Matthew 6:10; Revelation 22:20).
The full significance of the Lors's Supper in all of the above aspects is only realized when we come to this time with true faith, heartfelt prayer and true commitment to God's Word and purposes.

MY BODY ... MY BLOOD

7/23/2023

July 23 - Start Your Day Right Devotion

Picture
(KJ) 1 Corinthians 11:24-25 and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying. This cup is the New Testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

MY BODY ... MY BLOOD

When Christ said of the bread, "this is my body," He meant that it represented His body. (See Matthew 13:38, where the field "is" the world and the seed "stands for" the sons of the kingdom; also, Luke 8:11, where the seed "is" the Word of God.) The "cup" represents the blood of Christ that He shed to seal and confirm the "new covenant" of spiritual salvation through devoted faith in Christ. To "eat this bread and drink this cup" (John 6:54) means to recognize and accept the benefits of Christ's sacrificial death on the cross (1 Corinthians 11:26; 11:20).

A MYSTERY

7/2/2023

July 2 - Start Your Day Right Devotion

Picture
1 Corinthians 15:51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed-

A MYSTERY

The mystery Paul describes is the truth that when Jesus returns from heaven for His church (all of His true followers), the bodies of those believers who are alive at the time will be immediately transformed and made permanent, indestructible and immortal (John 14:3)

We will not all sleet

Paul's use of "we" indicates that he held to the New Testament perspective that Christ could come for His faithful people in Paul's own generation. Although Christ did not return in Paul's lifetime, Paul was not wrong in believing as he did. The words of Jesus and the entire New Testament urge every follower of Christ to believe that they are living in the last days and to hold on to the hope of Christ's soon return (1 Corinthians 1:7-8; Romans 13:12; Philippians 3:20; 1 Thessalonians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 4:15 1 Thessalonians 4:17; Titus 2:13; James 5:8-9; 1 John 2:18; Revelation 22:7, 12, Revelation 22:20; Matthew 24:42: Matthew 24:44; Luke 12:35). Those who do not anticipate Jesus' return in their lifetime are not living according to the New Testament pattern.

TEACHINGS

1 Corinthians 11:2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, just as I passed them on to you.

TEACHINGS

"Teachings" were instructions relating to doctrine (foundational beliefs and principles), moral standards and codes of conduct that Paul delivered to the churches by Christ's authority. Note that the instruction of 1 Corinthians 11 outlines God's design and desires for His people in such matters as outward dress, modesty, appearance and proper conduct. To teach that God is concerned only with inner attitudes and not with "externals" is not consistent with the clear and practical revelation in His Word. To dress and act properly and modestly in relation to God and others is a lasting Biblical principle (1 Timothy 2:9).
