We deceive ourselves if we think that being exposed to Bible teaching and Christian ministry is enough to keep us in a right relationship with God. We can be involved in all kinds of church activity and ministry and know a lot about God's Word; but if we do not put that Word into practice, all of our activity and knowledge is meaningless. We must develop true godly character and a lifestyle based upon our companionship with Christ in order to truly please God, fulfill His purposes for our lives and receive ultimate spiritual salvation (Matthew 7:21).

(KJ) James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

GET RID OF ALL MORAL FILTH

The Word of God, either preached or written, cannot effectively work a godly change in a person's life if he or she is holding on to any degree of moral corruption and evil in their lives. This can include character issues such as uncontrolled anger (James 1:19-20). 
  1. God commands His followers to separate themselves from all the ungodly beliefs, behaviors and lifestyles that are common in the general society and seek to influence them and their families. This moral darkness defiles souls and corrupts lives (Ephesians 4:22, 25, 31; Colossians 3:8; 1 Peter 2:1). 
  2. God's Word tells us what is proper for God's people: we are to be holy (morally pure, spiritually whole, separated from evil, dedicated to God and reserved for His purposes).. for this reason, we must not participate in any kind of moral impurity or obscenity (Ephesians 5:3-4), in thought or actions. We must be aware that allowing any kind of moral filth into our lives or homes, including foul language or sexually suggestive images through any number of media, grieves the Holy spirit and violates God's holy standards for His people. God's Word warns us, "Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes ... Therefore, do not be partners with them" (Ephesians 5:6).
  3. We, as believers, must take seriously God's commands about righteousness (reflecting a right relationship with God and doing what is right by God's standard) and holiness. Our houses (our lives) must be swept clean and filled with God's Word, His Spirit and the character of Christ (Matthew 12:43-45) 
WORD PLANTED IN YOU
Christians begin their new life in Christ (a personal relationship with Him) by being "born again" (John 3:3) "through the Word of truth" (James 1:18). Growing in this new life requires removing anything that offends the Holy Spirit so that we can faithfully receive God's Word into our hearts and respond to it with our lives. The term "planted" (Greek emphutos) implies that the Word must become a part of our very nature and character - affecting both who we are and what we do. The implanted Word, if nurtured and allowed to grow in our lives, brings us to our final salvation (Matthew 13:3-23; Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 15:2; Ephesians 1:13; John 6:54).

(KJ) James 2:1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

FAVORITISM

This passage describes favoritism as giving special attention to people because of their wealth, appearance, social status or position. To do so is wrong for several reasons. 
  1. It displeases God, who does not look at the outward appearance but at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7).
  2. It is not motivated by genuine love (James 2:8). Admiring or responding to people based on their social status is a sin against the Christian law of love (Leviticus 19:18; Romans 13:10; Matthew 22:39).
  3. It makes us "judges with evil thoughts" (James 2:4). Instead of honoring "our glorious Lord" and accepting people on the basis of faith in Christ and God's love for them, we unjustly favor rich or influential people. such behavior comes from an evil motive - what we might gain from them personally.

Those who are not spiritually mature (James 1:4) and have not made it their purpose or goal to become wise and mature will be unstable and easily snared by temptations (James 1:13), wrong teaching (Ephesians 4:14) and other difficult and deceptive issues. Such people are not ready to become what God wants them to be.

​We are capable of being affected by Satan’s temptations because of the sinful nature within us (our inborn tendency to go our own way and to defy God and His standards; see Romans 5:12; Romans 6:2; Matthew 15:19). If we follow the pull of our nature toward defiance and rebellion, temptation will take us down a road that leads to sin and finally to spiritual death (James 1:15; Romans 6:23; Romans 7:5, 10, 13).

April 20-Start Your Day Right Devotion

James 1:13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone.

​TEMPTED

​There is a significant difference between trials (James 1:2; James 1:4) and temptations (James 1:13-15).
  1. Trials typically result from outside sources beyond our control and are something to be endured with faith. In fact, trials test our faith and develop perseverance and maturity. By relying on God to help us through trials, we will grow spiritually, develop character and will finally receive “the crown of life” (James 1:12).
  2. In contrast, temptations often stem from inner moral struggles involving ungodly desires and are something to be resisted. Satan uses temptation to stir up evil desires within us and encourage us to defy God. If temptations are not resisted, the end result is spiritual “death” (James 1:14-15) and separation from God.
  3. God is not the source of temptation; temptation comes from Satan and our own ungodly desires. God is the source of that which is good (James 1:17-18). No person who sins can escape guilt by trying to blame God. Though God may test us and allow us to go through trials in order to strengthen our faith, it is never with the intent of leading or tempting us to sin. God’s nature and holiness mean that there is nothing in His character to which sin can appeal, which means that He cannot be a source of temptation.

James 3:17-18 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

BUT THE WISDOM THAT COMES FROM HEAVEN

​The opposite of earthly “wisdom” is heavenly wisdom, or the true wisdom from God. This wisdom is.
  1. “Pure” – with right motives and without moral corruption (James 1:21).
  2. “Peace-loving” – Not contentious or divisive (Matthew 5:9).
  3. “Considerate” – putting others’ concerns before self.
  4. “Submissive” – giving way to what is most beneficial for others.
  5. “Full of mercy and good fruit” – actively compassionate, forgiving and character building.
  6. “Impartial”- consistent and fair.
  7. “Sincere” – genuine and without hypocrisy.
