WHY DO THE NATIONS CONSPIRE

This psalm shows us four snapshots, or small pictures, that are constantly found among humankind. 
  1. The psalm writer begins by speaking of people groups and world leaders taking a stand against God's "Anointed One" (Psalms 2:1-3; Acts 4:25-27). This is a sad picture of humankind's prideful rebellion against God, His law, His plan to save them, His Messiah (the "Anointed One," Savior;) and the moral teaching of His Word. The New Testament authors recognize that same attitude of the world as it opposes Christ and His followers (John 15:19; Ephesians 6:12).
  2. God responds to the world's useless efforts to defy Him (Psalms 2:4-6). He mocks the world's efforts because the time is coming when He will put an end to human rebellion and will fully establish His kingdom on the earth at the end of time as we know it (Romans 1:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11; 1 Thessalonians 5:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:3; 1 Thessalonians 5:4; 1 Thessalonians 5:6; 1 Thessalonians 5:8; 1 Thessalonians 5:9; 2 Thessalonians 2:8; Revelation 19:11-21).
  3. God the Father promises to send His Sone (Psalms 2:7-9) to rightfully rule the nations (Acts 13:33; Hebrews 1:5; 5:5; Matthew 3:17; Matthew 17:5; 2 Peter 1:17) and to defeat all who oppose Him. This promise will be fulfilled when Christ returns to earth and destroys God's enemies (Revelations 12:5; Revelations 19:15). Then all His faithful followers will participate in His reign over the nations (Revelation 2:26-27; 20:1-6).
  4. Through the psalm writer, the Holy Spirit sends out a challenge to humankind to be wise with respect to Almighty God and to take refuge in a relationship with Him before the terrible day of God's judgment (Palms 2:10-12; Hebrews 3:7-19).

  3. When they are dying, He is there with them.
  4. Their death, which is of great value to Him, is the occasion when they are set free from all evil, taken from this life in victory and brough into heaven to see Jesus' face to face (Philippians 1:21).

​BECAUSE HE LOVES ME

Here the Lord Himself speaks to His faithful followers. Because they truly love Him, He Himself promises to come to their aid in times of trouble. The key to receiving God’s protective care is a heart that is passionately committed to the Lord and grateful for everything He is and does. God knows who such people are. He will be with them in trouble. He hears their prayers; He meets their needs. In fact, He gives them power to live fulfilling lives characterized, or distinguished, by His presence (John 14:12; John 14:13; John 14:15; John 14:16; John 14:17; John 14:17; John 14:18; John 15:1; John 15:2; John 15:4; John 15:6; John 15:7; John 15:9-10).

​The Lord promises to instruct and guide His followers (those who have been forgiven for their sins). These followers are those who show evidence of a humble and teachable spirit. They show that they treasure His presence and counsel (Psalms 33:7), trust Him completely (Psalms 33:10), rejoice in Him (Psalms 33:11) and continue to do what is right (Psalms 33:11).

​The Lord has committed Himself to guide His faithful followers throughout their lives and beyond, bringing them to the eternal home where they will be with Him forever (John 14:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:17; Philippians 1:21).
