​CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS

​In Paul’s explanation of justification (being made right with God, declared “not guilty” in relation to God), nowhere does he state that the righteousness of God or of Christ is actually credited or transferred to the believer. We must be careful not to describe justification by stating that Jesus’ obedience to the Old Testament law (the fact that He fulfilled the law in every area Romans 10:4; Matthew 5:17) somehow transfers to the believer as his or her fulfillment of and obedience to the law. If being made right with God were simply a matter of a transferred obedience to God’s law, then it would not be based on the same kind of faith that Abraham had (Romans 4:12). That would cancel the promise (Romans 4:14) because salvation would then be the result of our ability to earn it rather than receiving it as a gift of grace (Romans 4:16). Paul clearly states that Abraham’s faith was credited as righteousness because of God’s mercy and grace (Romans 4:16-22), not because of anything to do with the law, which was not even given until long after Abraham’s time. In the same way, justification and righteousness for all who accept Christ come “not through law” (Romans 4:13), but by God’s mercy, grace, love and forgiveness (Romans 4:6-9).
