In the midst of his suffering and despair, Job held onto the confidence that God would restore him in the end (Job 13:15; 14:14-15). He saw God as his “Redeemer” – one who could rescue him from trouble and save him from destruction. In Bible times, a “redeemer” was a relative (Ruth 2:20) who graciously came to protect, defend or reclaim what was lost in times of trouble or opposition (Leviticus 25:25; Deuteronomy 25:5-10; Ruth 1-4; Genesis 48:16; Exodus 6:6; Isaiah 43:1 Hosea 13:14).
