October 3-Start Your Day Right Devotion Deuteronomy 9:5 It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the LORD your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. NOT BECAUSE OF YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS Israel’s possession of the land was not a reward for their past faithfulness. Rather, it was God’s gracious gift based on His love and mercy. However, Moses warned the people that continued possession of the land would depend on their steadfast faith and obedience to God. If the Israelites became wicked like the Canaanites, they too would be destroyed and replaced by other (Deuteronomy 30:15-20). That is to say, God’s love and mercy, which were shown in His gift of the land, were conditional; if the people turned away from the Lord and forgot His word, they too would surely perish (Deuteronomy 8:11. 14, 19-20; 11:22-28).
