July 30 - Start Your Day Right Devotion 1 Corinthians 10:16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? THE CUP OF THANKSGIVINGThis was one of the cups drunk at the Jewish Passover, the occasion at which Jesus started what is often called the Lord’s Supper, or communion (Matthew 26:17-30; Mark 14:12-26; Luke 22:7-23). The drink that Christians receive when participating in the Lord’s Supper is symbolic of Christ’s sacrificial death to pay the penalty for people’s sin against God. “Participation in the blood of Christ” refers to Christ’s followers sharing in the spiritual salvation provided by Christ’s death (1 Corinthians 11:25). The Bible does not teach that the bread and the drink actually become Christ’s body and blood. These symbols and the occasion itself are simply to remind us of Christ’s sacrifice and the benefits He secured for us (1 Corinthians 11:24-25). BIBLE STUDY TOOLS I USE
