1 Peter 1:2 Who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.

THE FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD

We are “chosen” to be God’s people according to His “foreknowledge.” This means that just as God knows all things, He has always known how He would work out His plan to save people spiritually and restore them to a right relationship with Him through the work of His Son, Jesus. This plan was in effect even before creation and human history began (1 Peter 1:20; Revelation 13:8).

1. This does not mean that God determined who would be spiritually saved and who would be eternally condemned. Though God knows all thing, He has given us a free will to choose whether or not to accept and follow Him. That is to say, though God knows the choices we will make, He does not cause us to make those particular choices.
2. Foreknowledge, as used in this passage, is a synonym (a word of similar meaning, a substitute word) for God’s sovereign (supreme and independent) choice to love and set aside for Himself a people who would know Him personally and serve His purposes (Romans 8:29). In a general sense, this “people” is the church as a whole (all true followers of Christ; Ephesians 1:4; 2:4; 1 John 4:19). The church is the object of God’s love and choosing. God determined before human history that the church would be made up of people who are redeemed (purchased and restored to a right relationship with God) through Jesus’ sacrifice for sins so they would be prepared to serve His purposes. The church body includes only individual believers who respond to Christ by surrendering their lives to Him in faith and devotion. They continue to be part of God’s chosen people as they choose to remain loyal to Christ and live securely in His purposes for their lives (2 Peter 1:5, 10).
