Romans 13:4 For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

THE SWORD

​The sword was a symbol of government (Roman) authority on a national and international level. It is not against Biblical principles for governments to use proper force to maintain appropriate order in society. Also, since the sword is frequently associated with death as an instrument of execution (Matthew 26:52; Luke 21:24 Acts 12:2; 16:27: Hebrews 11:34; Revelation 13:10), some view this passage as making allowance for the execution of dangerous criminals who have committed vicious crimes (Genesis 9:6; Numbers 35:31, 33).
