Christmas cacti are such beautiful plants when they flower, and we often hear that cuttings have been passed down from generation to generation, often still thriving after decades. But are you sure you know which holiday cactus you have? They are often confused. First, Which Cactus Do You Have? Here's a startling revelation: you may have a Thanksgiving cactus instead of a Christmas cactus! Although they look very similar, they're two distinct plants. Unfortunately, the confusion between these holiday succulents is perpetuated by the fact that they're often mislabeled in garden centers. And since they both bloom in late fall or early winter it further adds to the confusion. But it's nice to know which one you truly have. Here's how to tell them apart: Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata)Leaves: You can tell the Thanksgiving cactus apart from the Christmas cactus by the shape of its leaves. The leaf segments, called "phylloclade's," are serrated or "toothed," with pointy spines; with 2-4 on each side. This is why these succulents are referred to as "Crab Claw Cactus." The end of the last segment is slightly concave with a point on each side. The leaves on the Thanksgiving cactus are "toothed."
Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera bridgesii)Leaves: The leaves of the Christmas cactus have a more rounded, scalloped edge. The tip of each segment is slightly curved but they can look almost straight across. Flowers: The flowers of the Christmas cactus are usually white or pink and bloom in December. But don't be surprised if you also see blooms between March and May on these plants. I had to do my research on Christmas cactus because, I ordered eight different colors. I had no idea that there is a Thanksgiving cactus as well. Now you have the whole story on Christmas or Thanksgiving cactus. Join us by signing up for our newsletter.
Blessings, Margarita & Stace Seasonal Allergies In South Texas as the seasons change. As November blows in, there's still enough sun in the forecast to mean that not everyone in Texas is enjoying the outdoors. Seasonal allergies are running rampant all over the state with blossoming of fall plants. You can hear Texans talk about "cedar fever" because of cedar trees. But make sure that you know additional plants to be aware of as the seasons change. Ragweed is by far one of the worst culprits for fall allergies in Texas. [Ragweed gets me every year..] Ragweed is a large green plant that has towers of blossoms on top of light green stems. It begins to bloom in mid-August and will continue to bloom until the first frost. This blooming season is long due to our first frost is typically late in the year. Did you know? When the ragweed is in bloom it can produce up to 1 billion pollen grains; and wind can move the pollen up into the air, causing allergies for those who can't even see any ragweed in sight. I have talked about the two seasonal plants & trees that trigger my family's allergies. According to Google this group of trees and plants also cause seasonal allergies...the cedar elm tree, lamb's quarters, Russian thistle, curly dock, and pigweed. The pictures above left to right. Top row - Cedar Elm Tree, Lamb's Quarters, Russian Thistle Bottom row - Curly Dock, Pigweed, Careless Weed Pigweed and Careless weeds look a lot alike and can be easily confused with each other. Fall allergies can affect many Texans during this time of year. Keep an eye out for these plants and try to stay clear of them...even though their pollen is moved by the wind. Like most of us Texans you deal with the seasonal allergies. Good luck with this years Seasonal Allergies. Join us by signing up for our newsletter
Blessings, Margarita & Stace Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. For one day, we stand united in respect for you, our veterans. This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to "Veterans Day" in order to account for all veterans in all wars. Is Veterans Day on the same day every year? When first celebrated as Armistice Day, the day marked the end of World War I, formally recognized on the “11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month” in 1918. Today we continue to celebrate the day as Veterans Day, still recognizing the original tie with November 11. That means Veterans Day is on the same day every year -- November 11 -- regardless of on which day of the week it falls. When the date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, government officials or businesses may recognize it on both the official day and the following Monday. Is Veterans Day a federal holiday?Veterans Day is a federal holiday, a bank holiday and, in most states, a state holiday. That means that federal employees, including military members, are typically given the day off and, in most states, state workers are as well. Whether Veterans Day is taken as a work holiday by companies is a business decision. Many companies choose to take off either Veterans Day or Columbus Day, which falls in October, but not both. Do schools close on Veterans Day?Many schools do close on Veterans Day, but whether they do so is typically not a one-size-fits-all decision. Public school holidays are set by the local school board, while private school holidays are set by private officials. State and private school college holidays are set much the same way. Check with your local school to confirm their calendar. Thank You To All Our Veterans! JOIN US BY SIGNING UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER.
Blessings, Margarita & Stace Our sweet Sugar. You may remember Sugar from earlier in the year. She was our bottle baby that we had in the house for several weeks. She went everywhere with me. She rode on the cart in the truck. I think she thought she was one of the dogs. Now she fits right in with all the other goats her age. Just let us get out the animal cookies and here they all come. This past weekend Stace was helping me fix the electric fence where one of the deer's ran through it. If it's not our livestock breaking the fence, it's the deer. Go figure... Sugar decided we wasn't fixing the fence right 😉 so she had to come out and tell us how to do it her way. Stace and I was busy working on the fence while Sugar was laying on the trailer talking to us. When we were all done and headed back up to the house Sugar rode along with us 😄 All of our critters here at Tailspin Farms are spoiled rotten. Join us by signing up for our newsletter.
