A RIGHTEOUS BRANCH … THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

Jeremiah 23:5-6 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.

​A RIGHTEOUS BRANCH … THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

​The branch refers to the line of kingdom rulers that came through King David’s “family tree.” This branch was cut off when God destroyed the kingdom in 586 B.C.

1. God did promise, however, to raise up another king from David’s family line who would be a righteous Branch. This King would do what was right and fulfill God’s purpose (Zechariah 3:8). This prophecy points to the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
2. Christ will fully execute His judgment after His second coming and before His millennial (thousand-year) reign on the earth (Revelation 20).
3. Christ will be called “The LORD Our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:6). “Righteousness” in the Bible means more than doing the right thing: it always stems from a right relationship with God and living by the commands and promises of the covenant, or “life agreement,” God established with His people. In this sense, our “Righteousness” (Hebrew Tsidkenu) is the opposite of rebellion (Hebrew pesha’) against God’s command and rejection of His promises.
4. Because of human weakness and sin, true righteousness can come only from God and the spiritual salvation He provides through His Son, Jesus Christ. When we accept Christ’s sacrifice for our sins and receive His forgiveness, He brings us into a right relationship with God and personally becomes “The LORD Our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:6; 1 John 1:3, 7). Scripture says that those who believe will “be found in Him, not having a righteousness of [their] own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ – the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith” (Philippians 3:9).
