IF THE EARTHLY TENT

Paul uses the conditional clause, "if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed," because he knows that Christ could return soon. In this case, he would not experience death. Rather, his body would be immediately transformed in going to be with Christ. The same possibility (either death or transformation) exists for Christ's faithful followers today. Jesus has stated that we do not know the day or the hour of His return (Matthew 24:36; Matthew 24:42; Matthew 24:44); therefore, we must always be prepared. That fact should serve as a powerful motivation for holy living, characterized by moral and spiritual purity, separation from evil and complete devotion to God (Matthew 24:42; 1 John 3:2-3).

EARTHLY TENT ... A BULDING

  1. The term "earthly tent" refers either to our earthly body or our earthly lives, which are temporary and frail. 
  2. The "building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands" likely refers to the general environment of the heavenly existence that will endure forever. It could also refer to a body prepared for believers in heaven while they await their resurrection body. 
Some have used this passage to teach that after death and while awaiting resurrection, believers exist as bodiless spiritus, vague shadows or naked souls without form. However, note that both Moses and Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration appeared with visible heavenly bodies, even though they were awaiting their resurrection bodies (Matthew 17:2-3; Mark 9:2-4). In addition, in Revelation 6:9-11 souls in heaven (among whom are those killed for their faith during the tribulation period who are awaiting God's final judgment on the wicked) are described a s visible and wearing white robes.

Paul's closing to this letter testifies to the New Testament church's belief in the Trinity (the one true God in three distinct, interrelated and unified persons, Mark 1:11). Paul prays that the Corinthians may continually experience...
  1. the grace of Christ - His presence, power, love and comfort
  2. the fatherly love of God will all His blessings
  3. a deepening companionship with the Holy Spirit. As long as God's presence is with us in these ways, our eternal salvation and place with God will be assured.

2 Corinthians 3:6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant - not of the letters but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

GOD HAS MADE US COMPETENT
​AS MINISTERS

The word translated "competent" (Greek hikanosen) means "qualified and sufficiently empowered," so that the results are pleasing to God. This is to say that God has not only called Christ's followers to spread His message of forgiveness and new life, but He has also empowered them to deliver that message effectively. 
THE LETTER KILLS, BUT THE SPIRIT GIVES LIFE
It is not God's law or His written Word itself that destroys. Rather, it is the requirements of His law, apart from the Holy Spirit's life and power, that condemn people (2 Corinthians 3:7, 9; Jeremiah 31:33; Romans 3:31). That is to say, God's law is good and right (Romans 7:12-14); but according to its perfect standards, all people are guilty and condemned to death. This is why the law is called "the ministry that condemns" (2 Corinthians 3:9). But this function of God's law was necessary because it exposed our own inability to live up to God's standard and revealed our need for Christ (Romans 5:20; Romans 7:7, 13; Galatians 3:24-25). Those who confess their offenses against God, accept His forgiveness and turn over the control and guidance of their lives to Him are renewed spiritually, and God's Spirit comes to live within them. Through His inner presence, the Holy Spirit gives Christ's followers a love for God's law, in addition to the power to live by its moral standards and principles.

DECEITFUL WORKMEN, MASQUERADING
​AS APOSTLES

The great deceiver, Satan (2 Corinthians 11:3; John 8:44), uses evil people as his agents, transforming them into "false apostles, deceitful workmen" and leading them to gain influence in the church and among Christians. 
  1. The Bible speaks of these deceitful leaders as people who, energized by Satan, (a) appear to accomplish great things for God (2 Corinthians 11:15; Revelation 13:2), (b) preach appealing messages (2 Corinthians 11:4; 1 Timothy 4:1) and (c) appear to be good and moral people. However, in reality the reject true godliness and deny its power (2 Timothy 3:5).
  2. These people disguise themselves as "apostles of Christ" and "servants of righteousness" (2 Corinthians 11:15). They imitate genuine Christian ministers, blending into their messages and lives a "form of godliness" (2 Timothy 3:5). Some of these individuals may actually have genuine care and concern, and they may preach forgiveness, peace, fulfillment, love and many other helpful things - yet they are seriously misguided and living under Satan's influence. One evidence of their false teaching is that their message is based on human reasoning and not a true interpretation of God's revelation (Galatians 1:6-7; 1 Peter 2:1-3).  It departs from authentic New Testament belief and teaching as revealed in the Bible (1 John 4:1).
  3. All of Christ's followers must beware of these misleading ministers (1 Corinthians 11:3-4; Matthew 7:15; 16:6). We must be faithful to look beyond their charisma, eloquent speech, education, miracles, apparent success or popular message so that we are not deceived by their message. 
  4. All religious leaders are to be judged according to their attitude and loyalty to the message of salvation through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ and to His original message as presented in the New Testament (Galatians 1:9).

2 Corinthians 11:4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we reached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

False teachers may admit that what is in the Bible is true, but they also claim to have additional revelations or knowledge equal in authority to Scripture. Such false teaching usually blends to Christian faith with other religious ideas or philosophies. This results in the following errors: 
  1. People put the supposed new revelation on the same level of authority as the original message of Christ as revealed in the Bible.
  2. God's Word becomes less important, and Christ takes second place to human leaders or founders of a movement or church. 
  3. The false teachers claim to have deeper understanding of so-called "hidden revelations" in Scripture. They teach and "reveal" things that supposedly have been missed or overlooked by countless godly people and preachers throughout history.

​AN ANGEL OF LIGHT

​We must be very aware and sober about the nature and deceptiveness of evil. We must always pray for spiritual wisdom and discernment because things are not always as they appear – particularly things that seem good, innocent, pleasing and beneficial, yet they deny some element of Biblical truth. This is true of people, organizations, religious philosophies, political strategies, social causes or anything ese that tries to involve or influence people. Even Satan tries to pass himself off as an angel of light when in reality he is the ruler of darkness.

2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

​YOKED TOGETHER WITH UNBELIEVERS

​Paul likely had in mind the Old Testament law of “mixtures” (Deuteronomy 22:10), particularly a regulation against a strong animal (the ox) being joined for plowing with a weaker animal (the donkey) because the result will be ineffective and destructive. Paul uses this as a metaphor, or word picture, for human relationships. In God’s eyes, people are divided into two categories: those who are in Christ – who have a right relationship with Him – and those who are not (2 Corinthians 6:14-16). For this reason, those who know Christ must not be in voluntary close partnership or association with unbelievers because such relationships can compromise and corrupt their relationship with Christ. Paul was likely attempting to discourage the Corinthians from cooperating with the false teachers who had infiltrated the church and gained influence with their persuasive words. But this principle certainly applies to dating, marriage, business partnerships, secret orders (lodges) and close friendships. A Christian’s relationships with unbelievers should center on what is necessary and appropriate for the social or economic purposes of daily life and to show people the way to spiritual salvation and a personal relationship with Christ. But a Christian’s closest and deepest personal relationships should be with other followers of Christ with whom they can relate on a spiritual level.
