Isaiah 7:12 But Ahaz said, "I will not ask; I will not put the LORD to the test."

I WILL NOT ASK

Pretending he was too humble; Ahaz rejected the prophet Isaiah's counsel to trust God to rescue Judah. Instead, Ahaz depended on his own limited understanding and looked to the power of Assyria for help (2kings 16:5-18; 2 Chronicles 28:16-21). This decision would bring trouble to them when Assyria later would invade and conquer Judah's former sister nation of Israel. Conflict between the Jews (of the family line or nation of Judah) and Samaritans would continue into New Testament times. Throughout the Old Testament the sin that perhaps brought the most severe consequences to God's people was the failure to take God at His word and depend on Him for help.

INIQUITIES HAVE SEPARATED YOU

Iniquity (Hebrew `awon) means "perversion or crooked behavior." It speaks of being guilty of immoral and unjust acts toward God. This type of sin and wickedness in our lives puts a wall between God and us. Because of this barrier, we no longer can experience the blessings of salvation, such as God's favor, protection and answers to prayer (Psalms 66:18).

GRAVE WITH THE WICKED

Isaiah 53:9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

A GRAVE WITH THE WICKED

This phrase gives us the hint that Jesus Christ would die alongside the wicked (the two thieves executed beside Him), or that the Roman soldiers planned to bury Him with those criminals. Yet, as prophesied here ("and with the rich in his death"), He was buried in a rich man's tomb (Matthew 27:57-60). Then again, the verse may simply be pointing out that although Jesus was sinless and did not deserve to die, He took our place and suffered death just like all other humans who die as a consequence of sin.

Isaiah 13:6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.

​DAY OF THE LORD IS NEAR

​The destruction of Babylon is a type (a prophetic symbol) that represents the end-time destruction of all God’s enemies, that end-time event will happen after God’s severe judgments on the earth and its people during the period often referred to as the tribulation (Matthew 24:21-22; Revelation 15-16). Isaiah puts these events together here (Ezekiel 32:7; Joel 2:10; 3:16; Haggai 2:6-7, 21-22; Zechariah 14:6-7). The final overthrow and destruction of the world’s corrupt political and religious systems that have opposed God and His people throughout history also are prophesied in Revelation 14:17-18.

​HAS A DAY IN STORE

​According to Isaiah, a time of judgment was coming for those who denied, neglected or rejected God because of their pride. This prophecy was fulfilled in part when God used the Assyrians and Babylonians to destroy Israel’s land (Isaiah 39:6; 2 Kings 17:25). In the larger perspective, “the day of the LORD” refers to the time when God will defeat and put an end to all evil on the earth (Joel 2:31; 1 Thessalonians 5:2; Revelation 4-19).

Isaiah 53:6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

WE ALL, LIKE SHEEP, HAVE GONE ASTRAY

​Part of humankind’s stubborn and rebellious nature includes the pull toward things that dishonor God. Individuals prefer to follow their own selfish ways rather than obey God’s commands and instructions (Romans 6:1). Living to please ourselves rather than living to please God is direct rebellion against Him. This is one of the primary definitions of sin. We are all guilty. Therefore, we all needed Christ to die in our place. He is the only one who ever followed God’s purposes completely, resisting all selfish desires (Philippians 2:3-5). For that reason, His life is the only life worthy to pay the full penalty for sin. In order to receive the benefits of His sacrifice, we must admit our sin, accept Christ’s forgiveness, give up our own way and submit our lives to Christ’s leadership and to God’s purposes.
