I SAW SATAN FALL In the original Greek, the tense of this phrase literally means “I was watching Satan fall like lightning.” Jesus saw in the spiritual realm what was happening as disciples ministered with His authority: Satan’s forces were defeated over and over again. Jesus’ remarks kept the disciples’ ministry in perspective. He shared their joy (Luke 10:21) and enthusiasm for God’s work, affirming that they had done effective spiritual battle and won significant victories over evil. But this statement was also warning the disciples not to become proud about their ministry. Jesus was the power behind their work, and He had literally witnessed Satan’s downfall and defeat from before the world began.
