SING TO THE LORD

Spirit-filled people (Ephesians 5:18) are encouraged to engage in three types of singing.

“Psalms” refer to the Old Testament psalms, which would have been much like the primary songbook for God’s people well into the early church period. This could represent singing God’s Word in general.
“Hymns” were early Christian’s confessions of faith in God and the message of Christ, which were sung as a church body. In general, a hymn is a song of praise to God that focuses on His acts or character traits.
“Spiritual songs” can be any songs that honor God and uplift the worshiper, including spontaneous words of praise, such as a prophetic song (1 Samuel 2:1-10; Luke 1:46-55, 67-69).

Singing is the language of the heart and a way of expressing inner joy, praise, worship, love, longing and thanksgiving to God. Singing can be an expression of the Holy Spirit within us (Ephesians 5:18; 1 Corinthians 14:14). All types of Christian singing – both in church and in private – should be primarily directed to God as prayers of praise, worship, or sincere request (Psalms 40:3; 77:6). Singing can be a means of encouragement, building others up, teaching, giving thanks and praying (Colossians 3:16). The purpose of singing God’s Word, hymns or spiritual songs is not entertainment, personal pleasure or to display one’s spirituality; it is to honor, praise and worship God (Romans 15:9-11; Revelation 5:9-10).
