October 6-Start Your Day Right Devotion Proverbs 13:24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. HE WHO SPARES THE ROD HATES HIS SONScripture instructs parents to discipline their children during their formative years (period when a child’s way of thinking and behaving are being shaped). But methods of discipline like spanking should be done only for deliberate disobedience or defiance that is done on purpose – and even then, it should be done with control and an attitude of loving concern. The goal of balanced punishment and discipline is to correct and remove foolish behavior, reckless activity, rebellion and disrespect for the parents (Proverbs 22:15). This verse does not justify excessive physical punishment, and it certainly does not give support for abuse. The necessary parental discipline given in a wise, loving and considerate manner helps children to learn that wrong behavior carries unpleasant consequences and may involve suffering (Proverbs 29:15). Such discipline is necessary so that children do not form attitudes and behavior patterns that will later bring them grief, ruin, injury or even death (Proverbs 19:18; 23:13-14). Godly discipline in a family will bring happiness, security and peace to the home (Proverbs 29:17). Any form of correction and discipline must always be done out of love, just as our heavenly Father shows toward us (Hebrews 12:6-7; Revelation 3:19). BIBLE STUDY TOOLS I USE
