August 28-Start Your Day Right Devotion (KJ) Colossians 2:23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honor to the satisfying of the flesh. RESTRAINING SENSUAL INDULGENCEThe reason that many of the rules and religious practices Paul referred to are worthless is because they totally fail to control sinful desires. They only involve outward restrictions, mostly affecting physical things (eating). However, issues that truly affect the mind and spirit - the types of behaviors and attitudes Paul mentions in Colossians 3 - are different. The problem is that some may attempt to apply these principles incorrectly by claiming that they are free from rules and standards that are issues of morality and sensual indulgence - things that do affect a person's mind and spirit. For example, certain forms of entertainment are often presented as matters of personal choice and conscience, and in some cases that may be true. But such activities do not fit the same category as those described in these passages. Things like movies and television viewing, that are filled with sexual images and hints, obscene language and shameful humor, are not thigs that simply go in and out of the body like food. These are issues of "sensual indulgence," and God's Word addresses such issues in an entirely different fashion (Colossians 3:5; Ephesians 5:3-7; Ephesians 5:5; Ephesians 5:6) because these things send ungodly images into our minds and corrupt our spirits (Romans 14:17). In Colossians 3, Paul proceeds to deal strongly with standards, of true Christian holiness (moral purity, spiritual wholeness, separation from evil and dedication to God and His purposes).
