THE LAW Remember that Paul is analyzing the condition of a person who accepts the truth of God’s Old Testament law and tries to live by its moral requirements apart from a relationship with Christ and without the spiritual transformation this relationship brings. Such a person is extremely conscious of his or her inability to live in a way that pleases God (Romans 8:1). By describing the inner moral conflict of a person struggling on his or her own against the power of sin, Paul shows that we cannot gain spiritual salvation by our own attempts to resist sin and obey God’s law. Though a person who has a right relationship with God may also experience struggles against sin, the nature of this conflict is quite different because it involves being united with Christ and the Holy Spirit against the power of sin (Galatians 5:16-18). The power available to the Christian through this relationship is more than enough to provide consistent victory over sin.
